Growing up in Fremantle, one of the most isolated cities in the world, I sometimes saw my father rolled up in shop doorways. Homeless. Fighting demons I was too young to understand.

What most people miss about homelessness is this: it is not about lacking a house. It is about lacking connection.

The community kept him alive.
The shelter workers who knew his name.
The café owner who offered a warm coffee.
The locals who stopped to chat.

They didn’t just keep him alive. They kept his humanity alive. Long enough for him to see my 30th birthday. After nearly losing him 100 times.

Then there was my mother. Forty-four years old when she met my father, who was 27 at the time. A single parent with two boys and endless bills.

She taught me something profound about service: it is not about what you have. It is about what you give.

She served from what looked like an empty cup. But it was overflowing with love, possibility, and unconditional belief in her children.
