My Principles | What I return to when everything gets loud
Life is simpler when principles guide it, rather than thoughts or passing feelings.
Thoughts change with sleep and blood sugar.
Feelings change with weather and who texted back.
Principles hold, which means that on the days I cannot think clearly, I can still act well.
These are mine. Not rules I found in a book, and not aspirations I am hoping to grow into. They are what is left after a decade of getting most of them wrong first.
I am not putting them here as instruction. I am putting them here because I have noticed that when one person says the quiet thing plainly, it gives other people permission to check whether the same thing is true for them. Take what is useful. Leave what is not. Your list will look different from mine and that is the point.
Before any of it, one condition.
Coherence is not a mood. It is checkable, and it takes about four seconds.
My body is not fighting my choices. My words match my actions. My relationships match my values. And I am not abandoning myself to maintain the life I am living.
When those four agree, I am coherent. When one of them disagrees, my body tells me first and my mind explains it away second.
Everything below is that one thing at three scales. ME. Then WE. Then ONE.
One. Self union
Everything begins with the relationship I have with myself, because that is the relationship every other one is built on top of. When I abandon myself quietly, in small ways, I do not become more available to people. I become someone who needs something from them.
I am already whole. Not a problem to solve. Not a project to complete.
I do not abandon myself to keep another. Love for someone else and loyalty to myself belong together.
I become my own safe place without becoming an island.
Every part of me belongs. King, Father, Lover, Warrior, Sage, Creator, Poet, Athlete and Child.
No single emotion, wound or desire rules alone.
I father myself. When the frightened part shows up, I do not abandon him.
My worth precedes my productivity. I do not have to achieve, provide or perform to deserve love.
I choose self-respect over attention.
My integrity is who I am when nobody is watching.
And I want things. Wanting is not a flaw to be trained out. Desire without grasping, hunger without hurry. A man with no appetite is not enlightened, he is anaesthetised.
Worth sitting with: where in my life am I quietly abandoning myself in order to keep something in place?
Two. Coherence
Coherence is a sequence, and it runs in an order. When I break the order, things do not fall apart immediately. They fall apart about ten days later, and by then I have usually blamed something else.
Coherence before creation. What I make carries the state I made it in.
Stillness before stimulus. I come home to myself before entering everyone else's world.
Being before doing. I do not use activity to escape myself.
Feel before reacting. The emotion is information, not automatically instruction. Anger included. Anger is clean information about a line that was crossed, and it does not have to be converted into wisdom before it is allowed to speak.
Regulate before communicating. Not instead of communicating.
Truth over comfort. Reality over potential. Consistency over intensity. Peace over chaos. Presence over performance. Creation over consumption. Alignment over obligation. Slow over rushed.
And when I genuinely do not know: pause, witness, do not force clarity, let reality reveal itself, then move wholeheartedly.
Worth sitting with: which part of that order am I currently skipping, and what has it been costing me?
Three. Truth and discernment
Most of the pain in my thirties came from seeing something clearly and then talking myself out of it. Discernment is not suspicion. It is the willingness to let what is actually happening be more important than what I hoped was happening.
I see life as it is, not only as I hope it could become.
Behaviour is information. Feelings matter, words matter, intentions matter, patterns matter more.
Perspective is not reality. Two truths can sit in one room.
I do not need to understand everything to know what is happening.
I stay with what I can observe rather than diagnosing someone else's inner world.
I ask for what I need. Always. That asking is mine to do and it is never chasing.
But I ask once for what someone else owes me, and then I let the answer be the answer. When clarity is available and still withheld, the withholding is the clarity. Asking a third time is negotiating with a decision that has already been made.
Understanding does not require agreement. Compassion does not require participation. Forgiveness does not require access. Love does not require reconciliation.
A boundary is not a punishment. It says only this: here is what I participate in, and here is what I do not.
Standards are not walls. My heart can stay open while my gate stays discerning.
Worth sitting with: what am I currently seeing clearly and choosing not to act on yet?
Four. Love
We learned a version of love that involves a great deal of effort, and I no longer believe effort is the mechanism. Love is not the thing that needs work. Choosing well is.
Love without possession. Devotion without self-abandonment. Freedom without ambiguity. Passion without chaos. Peace without boredom. Depth without drama. Support without rescuing. Space without disappearing. Truth without punishment. Conflict without abandonment.
No half love. Not one foot in and one foot out.
Open heart. Awake eyes. Grounded feet.
I refuse to let what hurt me reduce my capacity to love. I let it increase my capacity to discern.
I can lose someone without losing myself. I can miss someone without pursuing them. I can love someone and still say no. I can release someone without pretending I never loved them.
I do not compete for love. I do not negotiate basic integrity.
I choose slowly and I love fully.
Worth sitting with: am I loving this person, or am I working on them?
Five. Reciprocity
This is the one that cost me the most to learn, and it is the one I see most often in the people I mentor. We confuse over-functioning with devotion. The tell is simple. If I am building both sides of something, I am not being generous. I am being anxious.
I bring my hundred percent. You bring yours. Not half each. All of mine, and then the discipline to stop at the edge of it.
I build my side of the bridge and I let another adult have the dignity of building theirs.
I do not give harder when I am not receiving. I receive the information.
I allow other people to initiate. To help. To repair.
I allow myself to receive without first earning it.
Giving and receiving complete the circuit. Energy for energy is not scorekeeping. It just means I stop chronically overinvesting where there is no reciprocal movement.
I water me. You water you. We water each other.
Worth sitting with: where am I building both sides, and what am I afraid would happen if I stopped?
Six. Breaking the old cycles
Every one of these is something I did for years while believing it was a virtue. That is what makes patterns hard. They do not feel like patterns. They feel like being a good person.
I no longer confuse pursuit with devotion. Intensity with intimacy. Being needed with being loved. Understanding someone with being responsible for them. Forgiveness with tolerating repetition. Potential with present capacity. Uncertainty with chemistry. Suffering with significance.
I do not chase clarity from someone unwilling to give it.
I do not explain myself indefinitely in order to be understood.
I do not rescue people from the consequences of their own choices.
I do not make another person's healing my responsibility.
I do not make my peace depend on someone else's clarity.
I do not use silence or distance as a strategy to make someone come back.
I return to myself whether they return or not.
The old cycle was: disconnect, understand, question, explain, repair, try harder, carry more.
The new one is: notice, feel, regulate, communicate, listen, discern, choose, release.
Worth sitting with: which of those old moves is still running in my life, dressed up as something admirable?
Seven. Partnership
I am not looking for someone to complete anything. I am looking for someone whose life already works and who chooses to point it in the same direction as mine.
Not perfection. Alignment, attunement, coherence and mutual willingness.
Two whole people, freely choosing.
I choose the woman who chooses me. Not through one declaration. Through the pattern of her life.
Present capacity, not imagined potential.
Words and behaviour that broadly agree.
We protect each other's hearts and character. We can tell each other difficult truths. Neither person's freedom requires the other's abandonment. Neither person shrinks so the other can feel powerful. We stay individuals while cultivating an us.
When rupture happens, we return.
Responsibility and repair over perfection. Tell the truth. Listen. Own the impact. Apologise. Forgive. Learn. Change the behaviour. Rebuild trust.
Repair takes two. Reconciliation is optional. One person repairing alone is not repairing, they are absorbing.
It is not me versus you. It is us versus the pattern.
Same team.
Worth sitting with: in my closest relationship, are we repairing, or are we reconciling and moving on?
Eight. Forgiveness
I used to think forgiveness was unconditional and unlimited, and that the size of it measured the size of me. I have had to complicate that, and it took something to learn.
Forgive my parents. Receive the life, keep the wisdom, release the expectation that the past become different.
Forgive former loves. Honour what was real without demanding that it continue.
Forgive those who hurt me. Keep the lesson, release the poison.
Forgive myself. For chasing. For overgiving. For staying. For leaving. For ignoring what I already knew. For expecting myself to have known then what I know now.
I release the debt without releasing the wisdom. I do not need resentment to hold a boundary and I do not need an apology to choose peace.
And here is the part that is not usually said out loud. Forgiveness that is not met is not forgiveness. It is absorption.
Given to someone who then changes, it is repair. Given to someone who then repeats, it is a subsidy, and people learn what things cost. The difference is not in my heart. My heart does the same thing both times. The difference lives entirely in what happens afterward.
So I give the repair fully, once, from my best. Then I watch what happens next.
And forgiveness has no timeline I owe anyone, including myself. An arrival performed early is not an arrival.
Worth sitting with: is there somewhere I have called it forgiveness when what I was really doing was absorbing it?
Nine. Cause and effect
Two things are true at once here, and holding only one of them causes problems. Everyone knows what they are doing. And everyone did their best with what they had at the time. The first is how I stop excusing behaviour. The second is how I stop carrying poison.
One hundred and ten percent responsibility for my own choices. No victim, no blame. Choice.
Not my drama, not my karma.
Every choice has a cause, an effect and a consequence. If I cannot help, then at least do no harm.
We all make mistakes. What happens next matters more than what happened.
You cannot buy a peaceful night's sleep.
It is all energy. Thoughts, emotions, actions. What I put into the field is what circulates back through it.
Worth sitting with: where am I still waiting for someone else to take responsibility before I move on?
Ten. Character
Reputation is what people say. Character is what is left when nobody is saying anything. I have watched what happens to people who optimise for the first and I would rather not.
Character is revealed in the depths, not the highs.
How I treat strangers, animals and people who can do nothing for me is who I actually am.
I am more concerned with my character than my reputation. I cannot control the account another person gives of me. I can only keep being someone that account does not fit.
The higher anyone rises, the louder the darkness gets. That is weather, not evidence.
Drink my water. Mind my business.
Alignment over performance. What is inside over the image of it.
I know the difference between my values and my voids. What is meaningful, and what is merely filling a gap.
Fulfilment is inside out.
Worth sitting with: what would change in my week if nobody could see any of it?
Eleven. The alchemy
Everything can become medicine. Not because everything that happens is good. Because I get to choose what I create from it.
Devotion becomes discernment.
Persistence becomes patience. Intensity becomes presence. Analysis becomes curiosity. Rescuing becomes invitation. Overgiving becomes reciprocity. Control becomes trust.
Potential becomes reality. Attachment becomes choice. Fear becomes courage. Anger becomes clean action. Grief becomes deeper love. Pain becomes wisdom. Forgiveness becomes freedom.
Worth sitting with: what is currently painful in my life, and what is it in the process of becoming?
Twelve. Creation
I build because it is in my nature, not because building proves anything about me. It took me a long time to be able to say that honestly.
I create from wholeness, not deficiency.
Create more than I consume.
Frequency before form. Not magical thinking. Embodiment. Who am I being? What am I reinforcing? What am I repeatedly choosing?
Embodiment before evidence. I do not wait for the world to give me permission to become the man capable of holding the vision.
Clear intention. Wholehearted action. Open hands on the outcome.
I control my effort, integrity, preparation and action. I release the exact result.
The Creator asks what could exist. The Sage asks what exists now. Both belong.
Worth sitting with: am I building this from overflow, or from something I am trying to prove?
Thirteen. Receiving
Most of us are far better at giving. Giving keeps us in control. Receiving requires admitting we needed something, and that is the harder practice by a long way.
Abundance gives and receives.
Money is not my worth. Money supports life, life does not serve money. Money is stored choice.
I create real value and allow myself to receive for it.
Receiving is not selfishness. Rest does not need to be earned. Ease is safe. Success does not require suffering.
Enoughness precedes expansion. I do not need more in this moment for this moment to be enough.
And from that enoughness, I welcome more. More love, more health, more laughter, more money, more contribution, more adventure, more intimacy, more family, more creation. Not because something is missing. Because I am alive and available to receive more of life.
Positive sum, always. I do not need someone else to lose for me to win.
Worth sitting with: what has become so normal in my life that I have forgotten it was once something I dreamed of?
Fourteen. Leadership
Leadership is not how many problems reach my desk. That is a bottleneck I once learned to be proud of.
People before profits. We over me.
Leadership is invitation, not control.
Strength is not loudness. Power does not require domination. The strongest man in the room is usually the calmest one.
I do not need to prove I could fight. The Warrior exists so that peace stays possible.
I lead through embodiment before instruction.
I do not take responsibility for another adult's choices. I take full responsibility for mine.
Accountability without self-punishment.
Worth sitting with: am I leading people, or am I carrying them?
Fifteen. Contribution
The measure was never scale. One life genuinely changed is a real thing.
Contribution over accumulation.
Service from overflow, never from self-sacrifice. Depletion is not devotion and an empty cup serves nobody.
The tree receives before it gives. Roots receive nourishment. The trunk holds. Branches express. Fruit contributes. Seeds become the next forest.
I plant trees whose shade I may never sit beneath.
And the only measure that survives me is how people feel deep inside after being near me.
Worth sitting with: what grew because I was here?
Sixteen. Family, body, and the ordinary
This is the part that used to be the reward and is now the ground.
I become the father before becoming a father. Presence over provision alone. My children will learn who I am mostly from how I live.
Home is something I embody before it is somewhere I live.
Friendship is load-bearing, not overflow. I stop scheduling the people who know me last.
My body is not the price I pay for my ambition. Health is part of wealth. Movement by joy. I listen to the body before forcing the mind's agenda.
I build a life I do not need to escape from. Low stress is not a lack of ambition, it is intelligent design.
Breakfast. Ocean mornings. Training. Messy kitchens. Friends around the table. Laughing.
These are not interruptions to the success. They are the success.
Life is happening now. Not after the next launch, relationship, income level or achievement.
Worth sitting with: if the ordinary Tuesday is the measure, how is mine?
What I come back to
Come home to myself. Every morning.
See reality clearly. Keep my heart open and my eyes awake. Tell the truth kindly, even when it stings. Ask for what I need. Give without abandoning myself. Receive without guilt. Choose what chooses me. Forgive without forgetting the lesson. Create more than I consume. Protect peace without building walls. Love deeply without possessing. Act wholeheartedly without gripping the outcome. Let people be free. Let myself be free.
And when I do not know: pause, witness, let it reveal itself, then move.
I am not writing this from the far side of it. Several of these are principles I am still learning to live rather than lessons I have completed, and I would rather say that than perform an arrival I have not made.
But I have noticed that the list gets shorter every year, not longer. That feels like the direction.
Whatever your own version turns out to be, it will not be mine, and it should not be. The value was never in the list. It was in the honesty required to write it.
The door is open. No rush.
